IYRS’ Experiential Education & Career Development department offers students a variety of career planning support including workshops focused on professional communication & resume writing. Additional one-on-one career counseling sessions are held throughout a student’s course of study. These personalized sessions assist students in building skills to obtain employment and independently manage their future careers.
All IYRS students are required to complete an externship, which represents a significant experiential learning opportunity, typically with an outside company. The externship represents an educational strategy that links classroom learning and student interest with the acquisition of knowledge in an applied work setting. Through direct observation, reflection and evaluation, students gain an understanding of the externship company’s mission, work environment, customers, and the organization’s position in the broader industry or field.
To help jump-start students’ networking and knowledge of industries and associated career paths, IYRS recommends a variety of resources such as websites, blogs, newsletters, magazines, trade organizations, and trade shows to become familiar with before, during and after completing an IYRS program.
LinkedIn is an ideal tool for networking and researching job opportunities, companies and industries, as well as building a network, sharing updates, creating or joining a community. IYRS offers an exclusive group for students and alumni to connect, as well as receive job opportunity updates that are sent in to IYRS directly from employers.
Articulation agreements help document a pathway between two institutions of higher education by presenting options for credit transfers. Typically a student will utilize an articulation agreement if they are interested in pursuing a degree program after completing an IYRS training program. IYRS maintains articulation agreements with Salve Regina University, Roger Williams University, and Community College of Rhode Island.
