Widget Winner: Two Odd Shaped Pieces of Steel

More

Integral to the Marine Systems program is an appreciation of “fit and finish”…

Within this framework students will learn proper cutting, taping and dimensioning techniques on steel.  As a fun exercise we have students make the “Widget”, two odd shaped pieces of steel that are fasten together with a steel strap and hex bolts that are tapped into the shaped plates.  Tightness of fit between the plates convey how well the students did on proper cutting, dimensioning and filing techniques.  Student teams compete on who has the best fit.  Instructor, Nels, uses a feeler gauges to measure the gap between the plates and flatness of the top edge.  Tightest fit wins!  This semester team Jim / Nico took the prize!
