Press Release – For Immediate Release – March 15, 2017
New IYRS program in Digital Modeling & Fabrication will focus on training emerging, high-value technical & hands-on skills.
IYRS School of Technology & Trades is pleased to announce that last week the Rhode Island Council on Postsecondary Education (RICPE) approved IYRS’ proposed fourth full-time program offering in Digital Modeling and Fabrication. IYRS’ accrediting body, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC), will now review the program.
The comprehensive nine-month Digital Modeling & Fabrication program will focus on the basics of product development, including interpreting design work, and then taking design into prototyping and manufacturing. Students will initially learn about computer-aided design (CAD), design thinking, and the processes by which individuals and companies bring a product from concept to prototype. Students will learn how to use subtractive tools, including CNC machines, lathes, and additive tools such as 3D printers. The goal is for graduates to build scalable skills and the ability to support the production of a design from ideation to creation and production – skills of high value to a myriad of manufacturing industries and commercial applications.
The program, once approved and accredited, will be housed within a new 20,000 square foot facility currently under construction on the IYRS campus in Newport, RI. The facility will also house current IYRS programs in Composites Technology and Marine Systems, presenting students the opportunity to collaborate across various technologies, software’s and materials.
In addition to approval of the new program, IYRS also received approval on an official name and mission change, from International Yacht Restoration School to IYRS School of Technology and Trades. The institutional name change is a reflection on the ongoing growth of the institution into a high end, post-secondary maker-builder school with an exceptional reputation and record for placing students in externship and job opportunities within the marine trades, aerospace, aeronautics, green energy, defense, custom construction and architectural industries.
