Regatta Weekend Title sponsored by Officine Panerai

The 38th Annual Panerai Newport Classic Yacht Regatta presented by IYRS returns August 26th and 27th to celebrate classic yachts, both power and sail, and the importance of the craft associated with their restoration. This is the inaugural year of back-to-back scheduling and collaboration between the Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta and the Newport Classic Yacht Regatta. The Panerai Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta will be sailed Friday August 25th in Bristol, RI, immediately followed by the Panerai Newport Classic Yacht Regatta which will commence in Bristol with a race to Newport on Saturday, Aug 26. The Newport Classic Yacht Regatta will have a harbor parade Sunday morning the 27th followed by racing on lower Narragansett Bay. The pairing of the Herreshoff and Newport events offer three days of racing that will be known as the Narragansett Bay Classic Yacht Rendezvous.

Newly added for this year is a “point to point” motor yacht race from Bristol to Newport on Saturday, August 26th. “For the first time classic motor yachts are invited to join the classic sailing yacht events this year making it a celebration of all varieties of classic yachts from motor to sail” say Co Chairs Carol O’Malley and Jamie Hilton. “We are working toward making this event one of the world’s largest classic yacht events so that Newport can become known as a classic yacht capital in addition to its legendary status in all other aspects of the sport”.

The majority of the yachts in the event will congregate at the IYRS School of Technology & Trades marina in Newport Harbor and the Alofsin Piers at Sail Newport/Fort Adams State Park after racing.

The Newport Classic Yacht Regatta is the final stage of the North American Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge which also includes the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (Marblehead, MA), the Sail Nantucket Regatta and the Nantucket Opera House Cup Regatta (Nantucket, MA), and the Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta (Bristol, RI). The regatta attracts classic yachts with extraordinary pedigrees. IYRS is especially honored to welcome title sponsor Officine Panerai in celebrating their 13th year as the title sponsor of the Classic Yacht Regatta. The high-end Italian-designed time piece brand has deep-rooted links to the sea, the true heritage of the Brand, which bestows on each timepiece a sporting character that is unique and authentic – much like the exceptionally crafted yachts competing in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Series globally. IYRS is a world renowned school that teaches the craft associated with great making.

Additional industry sponsors include Classic Yacht Owners Association, Code-Zero, East Passage Boatwrights, Newport Shipyard, Ocean Navigator, Regatta Ginger Beer, Rhode Island Sailing Events Commission, Sail Newport, and Santa Margherita.

Registration will be open at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol on Thursday, August 24 from 5:00-7:00PM, on Friday August 25 from 8:00-10:00AM and 5:00-6:30PM, and Saturday, August 26 from 8:30-9:30AM. The public is invited to join the festivities at the Welcome Cocktail Party on Saturday, August 26 from 6:00-8:00PM at IYRS in Newport with entertainment by the Honky Tonk Knights. Enjoy the splendor of Newport Harbor and the timeless beauty of the classic yachts on display in the IYRS marina, and share in the excitement and celebration of craft, on-water competition, and teamwork.

The Classic Yacht Parade starts at 10:30AM on Sunday, August 27 at the entrance of the harbor. On moving display around the harbor is a beautiful collection of as many as 50 classic yachts, both sail and power, which represent the very best of classic yacht design and construction. This is an opportunity for boat lovers as well as for anyone who appreciates beauty, craftsmanship and nautical history, and there are many wonderful vantage points to view this procession of spectacular yachts, including the IYRS marina, Goat Island Marina dock, Bowen’s Wharf, Bannister’s Wharf, The Newport Yachting Center dock, King’s Park Pier and the Alofsin Piers and Sail Newport Waterfront Center at Fort Adams. The yachts will be vying to win the coveted Classic Yacht Parade awards including “Best Sail”, “Best Power”, “Most Patriotic” and “Best Costumes”. If you have your own beautiful classic boat, we’d love to have you join the parade (it’s free!)
