Student and Academic Services Associate

Job Title: Student and Academic Services Associate

JOB SUMMARY:

IYRS School of Technology & Trades (IYRS), with its administrative offices in Newport, RI, is a non-profit organization providing world-class experiential education, preparing students to enter a global making and manufacturing workforce. IYRS teaches the art and science of making, building, restoring and maintaining, and in the process, helps its graduates build both careers and more meaningful lives – inspired by the knowledge that in their hands and through the use of technology, they have the power to build almost anything.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and Student Services Manager with direct communication lines to the Chief Academic Officer, the Student and Academic Services Associate is the liaison to students and the public. This position is also responsible for coordination of dissemination of information to students, coordination of student information between departments, and will ensure the upkeep of student records/files.

This role is highly visible and works with most student facing aspects of the organization. The Operations Associate will generally work in the IYRS administrative offices from 8:30am to 5pm, with some flexibility available.

In supporting Student Services (50%):

  • Greet visitors to the Welcome Center, resolve routine and complex inquires
  • Respond to student questions as they pertain to general student inquiries and attendance
  • Manage the student time and attendance reports in all programs
  • Manage collection of grades and creation of student transcripts
  • Organize and schedule Program Advisory Committee meetings, take meeting minutes and maintain committee binders
  • Support Experiential Education & Career Services with coordination assistance for a variety of projects including but not limited to career day, student externships and placement metrics.
  • Monitor ACCSC accreditation requirements and incremental progress throughout the year and submit required documents.

 

In supporting Academic operations (50%):

  • Assist with the coordination of instructor professional development as requested and submit courses completed for each faculty member to human resources.
  • Assist with the coordination between programs and departments on a wide range of activities including course offerings, scheduling, internal publications, announcements, grading systems and academic reports to help ensure efficient communication.

Other ad hoc projects and assignments may be assigned.

From time to time, additional time will be required on week nights and weekends to support student and organizational activities such as Launch/Graduation Day, Annual Gala, Classic Yacht Regatta and other events.

IYRS seeks a creative and experienced leader for our new Digital Modeling & Fabrication Program. This organized leader has a distinguished record as an innovative, industrial and/or product designer with the ability to; build a pedagogy, develop the program culture, attract new students and faculty to the DM+F program.

The position represents a strategic opportunity for an integrative thinker and pragmatic leader to build an environment of critically informed and publicly engaged makers, as IYRS embarks on a new long-range plan.

The Digital Modeling & Fabrication Program Manager responsibilities are the following:

  • Lead the IYRS digital fabrication and modeling curriculum
  • Implement a process of continuous pedagogical improvement
  • Build a pool of and oversee of full time and adjunct faculty.
  • Oversee the acquisition, set up and maintenance of equipment, tools and materials inventory
  • Uphold IYRS standard of craftsmanship and instruction
  • Staying informed of innovations within the industry including use of modern tools and equipment
  • Develop of syllabus and schedules for full term and professional development programs
  • Assisting with finding and supporting industry internships
  • Administering standard IYRS operating procedures, including; managing the budget, ensuring, explore improvements to procedures and oversee shop technician and student shop assistant program
  • Maintaining safety standards and uphold student policies per handbook
  • Maintaining understanding of and relationships with collaborative shops and related opportunities

 

Required Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will have a track record of leading successful interdisciplinary initiatives and/or businesses.

  • Terminal degree desired, bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience in makerspaces
  • Five or more years of teaching/industry experience required
  • High degree of familiarity with CAD/CAM systems, computer technology, and related digital technologies, including: 3D printers, laser cutters, scanning devices, and CNC machining equipment.
  • Supervisory/management experience preferred
  • Knowledge in contemporary design principles and advanced fabrication technologies
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and the general public at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work in and lead in a team environment
  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate the attributes and benefits of the unique setting and educational experience of IYRS DM+F

Additive Technologies Shop Technician and Instructor responsibilities are the following:

  • Drive the IYRS additive manufacturing technologies curriculum
  • Implement a process of continuous pedagogical improvement
  • Perform the setup and maintenance of equipment
  • Create and stock a materials and consumables inventory
  • Manage equipment warranties, service plans and liaise with service technicians
